The requirements for collecting rigid plastic

1. Legislative prerequisites

  • It depends on the country.
  • In Finland, there is currently no legislation mandating the recycling of rigid plastics. Existing recycling solutions for rigid plastics are often based on experimental projects.

2. Technology

  • To attract more stakeholders to organise the recycling of rigid plastics, technologies for material recovery are needed.

3. Investments

  • Both public and private funding is needed.
  • Organising the collection and treatment of rigid plastics will certainly entail additional costs compared to the current situation (in Finland).
  • Technologies should therefore be developed to ensure that recycled materials can be reused.

4. Stakeholders

  • The main stakeholders are local municipalities and regional authorities and the local waste management authority.
  • In addition, the best results are achieved when companies with an interest in using recyclable materials are involved.

5. Society and environment

  • The main benefit for the society is the reduction of burned or unused plastic waste.
  • Recycling rigid plastics is expected to increase the use of recycled plastics as raw materials for new products, thereby reducing reliance on virgin materials.
